2022/23 Wedding Hair Trends

Since we came back from the lockdowns in 2020 and 2021 I’ve seen a big increase in demand for three styles in particular. But before I talk about these let me take you back a couple of years….

The past and my lockdown prediction for the future

After the initial shock of the first lockdown and the grants for the self-employed were released here in the UK I had time to think about less urgent things…like how is hair going to change when we get back? I remembered what I knew about hair history, that is, after times of recession or war (WW2 in particular) or any other time of hardship, style comes back with a BANG and it’s not the same as before the event. It’s a sort of celebration and a time of more joy, so fashion will usually reflect this. My prediction was style would split in two, one side would go minimalist because we got used to wearing less make-up and being more low key in our day to day style or the opposite would happen. That is, people would let their hair down in both senses and embrace extravagant style and bright colour.

Was I right?

On the whole, I think yes! I’ve now styled hair for over 150 weddings since the first lockdown and I would say that while rustic/boho styles still dominate, I have seen the rise in popularity of both minimal and maximal style.

What has been the most popular style?

Since the lockdowns people have quite literally ‘let their hair down’. I’ve come to see this as a reflection of people’s happiness for freedom and an escape from feeling constrained or confined. So to summarise….I’ve seen a huge demand for styles that have some or all of the hair down.

Half up/half down

Undoubtably the most popular style of the past 2 years, and I don’t think it’s going anywhere yet! There are a few things to consider with this style, so make sure you read my article how to best achieve this here.

Hollywood waves

This is the first choice for those that want to feel like a red carpet star on their wedding day. However, I hate to disappoint, but this isn’t the easiest style to wear. It’s high maintenance and not suitable for all hair types. Be prepared to choose something else if your stylist advises that this style isn’t going to work for you. I’ll write an article on this style soon.

The minimalist bun

This clean and modern style is perfect for both minimalists and maximalists. Chosen by minimalists for obvious reasons, but also, surprisingly by maximialists for when they want to attention to go on other elements of their outfit.
