Should I Wear My Hair Up Or Down on my Wedding Day?

Some of you will know from the start how you want to wear your hair, but most people aren’t sure. Here are a few things to consider and to help you make that decision.

For those of you who think you know….

You probably have a signature hairstyle you know and love. You know what suits you and you know what your hair will and won’t do. And that’s really important!

If you love wearing your hair down, if it’s you, and you’re confidant and comfortable with it down or part down DO THAT. Do not feel under pressure to do something else because Pinterest said, or your mum said or your friends said.

The most important thing is that you feel your best and full of confidance.

This isn’t to say you shouldn’t try something else though, and I call this….

The wild card

If I can tell a client is on the fence about up or down then I will encourage them to try it.

50% of the time a client will love it and actually go for it. The other 50% who don’t love it will know that their orginial idea was the right one. You win either way!

And those of you who have no idea what to do….

Ask yourself the following questions:

Does my dress look better with hair up or down?

Sometimes a high neckline might mean you’ll prefer your hair up so you don’t cover it. Or maybe there are some gorgeoues details on the shoulder you don’t want to cover with long hair (obviously this wouldn’t apply to a bob!)

Does my hair hold a curl (when curled with a tong, wand etc..)?

I think this is the biggest consideration if you’re on the fence. If your hair doesn’t hold a curl very well you may want to go up. However, you can help your waves last by adding in clip-in human hair extensions. I wrote an article about them here.

Are you wearing a statement headpiece?

If you’re wearing something like a statement headband, flower crown or other large accessory you’ll need to think about how your hair will fit together with this. The headpiece may decide on your style for you!

When does your hair look its best?

It’s really about showing off the best thing about your hair. For example, finer hair often looks better up as volume can be faked with padding and backcombing. Your hair might be thick and super shiny, in which case it might want to wear it down to show that off (but it would look lush up too!). If your hair is natually curly you might want to showcase your curls by wearing your hair down. Or if you wear it up you might want to keep the curls and wear a style with lots of volume.
