If you have naturally curly hair, chances are you’ve had trouble finding inspiration photos for your wedding hair. If that’s the case look no further because I’ve put together a Pinterest mood board for lots of types of natural curls which you can view here.

I’ve added curly hairstyles I’ve created below for more inspration, keep scolling to learn how I work with curly hair.

My Approach to Curly Hair

Clients with curly hair often tell me stories about bad experiences when having had their hair styled in the past. Often, it’s that they’ve been a bridesmaid and the stylist has straightened their hair and they’ve not only felt their hair was really flat, but that it became frizzy in a relatively short space of time.

Some of my first questions to curly haired clients are ‘do you want to keep your curls looking really natural, do you enjoy the volume your curls give you and are your curls generally well behaved on a day-to-day basis’?

I’ll work in one of two ways depending on the answer.

If the client loves their curls and they behave well on a day-to-day basis I will go in where needed with a tong/wand that is the same size as their curls to just tidy them up. This is so you can wear the best version of your natural curls. This works well for tighter curls and most clients go for this option.

This option does require a little work from the client. They need to know what products work well in their hair when it’s drying from wet. Like trying to find the right foundation, this is super individual to each client, and I’m often told it can take years before they find the right combination of products.

Thankfully, companies are providing more and more excellent products for curly hair types! Davines, Bumble & Bumble and Only Curls are just a few of the companies catering to curls or have thier own dedicated ranges.

My second approach is to blow dry the hair smooth and create the curls from scratch with a tong/wand that matches the clients own curl size. This works well for clients who haven’t quite found their holy grail hair products or their curls are very unpredictable. I might also use this approach for clients who have a looser curl.
